  Introduction:

Morbidity and mortality from peripheral arterial disease (PAD) are higher than from coronary heart disease (CHD) or cerebrovascular disease (CVD). The atherosclerosis that characterizes PAD is largely undiagnosed and untreated. PAD experts tell us that the most urgent need in this market is for aggressive secondary prevention of atherothrombotic events.

  Questions Answered in This Report:

Angiogenic therapies have the potential to revolutionize symptomatic PAD treatment by generating new blood vessels in the legs. Which patient segments will benefit most from these exciting new products? What regulatory hurdles will drug developers have to overcome to bring angiogenic therapies to the market?

Currently, use of clopidogrel (Sanofi-Aventis/Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Plavix/Iscover) is confined to symptomatic patients for whom reimbursement is not an obstacle. However, clopidogrel will face patent expiry in 2011. Will genericization boost prescriptions for clopidogrel? Or will it face strong competition from emerging antiplatelet agents?

The 2006 patent expiry of Zocor will prompt widespread adoption of generics at the expense of this and other leading statin brands through 2016. Will the influx of generic simvastatin products significantly erode sales of Pfizer’s atorvastatin (Lipitor)? If so, to what extent?
