DR Reports --

Although more than 200 types of cancer are known, about 50%
of all cancer cases (and cancer-related deaths) worldwide are attributable to
just four tumor types: breast, colorectal, lung, and prostate. These four
cancers are considered solid tumors. We anticipate significant growth in the
solid tumor therapy market, which will more than double in size over the
2003-2008 study period. This growth will be fueled by research and development
efforts directed toward the creation of drugs that target unique tumor
processes more specifically and affect healthy tissue less, patent expirations
of key cancer drugs, and the ability of agents to treat more than one type of
cancer. Because the solid tumor market is so diverse, many emerging players are
entering the field of oncology and developing promising candidates. Large
pharmaceutical companies have the opportunity to license these agents from the parent
companies or to partner with them.
In this report on the solid tumor market, we focus on
therapies being developed for breast cancer, colorectal cancer, lung
(non-small-cell and small-cell) cancer, and prostate cancer. We identify the
major and emerging companies in the solid tumor marketplace and assess their
marketed and pipeline drugs in terms of clinical potential and commercial
viability. Additionally, we forecast market share by company for the major and
emerging players to 2008. We describe the etiology and pathophysiology of these
diseases, their epidemiology, and their diagnosis. We discuss the current
therapies used to treat these disorders and evaluate the clinical and
commercial potential of emerging agents. We conclude with a series of detailed
company profiles, including companies’ alliance activity and financial
information, and we note trends in the growth of companies’ pharmaceutical
sales and R&D expenses.
